Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s verified X account was briefly compromised on Thursday, allowing attackers to promote a fraudulent meme coin called Vladhood (VLAD) in the latest high-profile social media hack targeting the cryptocurrency industry.
The fake post, which was quickly deleted after Robinhood regained control of the account, falsely presented Vladhood as the “official mascot of Robinhood Chain” and claimed the token would soon be listed on the Robinhood trading app. The message also included a smart contract address, encouraging users to purchase the token while leveraging Tenev’s credibility and Robinhood’s newly launched blockchain network.
Robinhood later confirmed that the post was unauthorized and urged users to ignore the promotion.
Robinhood Confirms CEO’s Account Was Compromised
The incident unfolded on July 24 after crypto users noticed an unusual post appearing on Tenev’s X account, which has nearly 800,000 followers.
The fraudulent message promoted VLAD as an official Robinhood-affiliated meme coin, claiming it would serve as the mascot for Robinhood Chain, the company’s recently launched Ethereum Layer-2 network. It also suggested that the token would eventually be listed within the Robinhood app—a claim that was entirely false.

Shortly afterward, Robinhood addressed the incident through its official communications account on X.
“Heads up: Our CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised and posted a fake promotion for a meme coin. We’re working with X to restore access and the post has been removed.”
The brokerage emphasized that Vladhood has no official connection to Robinhood or Robinhood Crypto, and that users should not treat the token as an endorsed project.
Blockchain explorer tools associated with Robinhood Chain also quickly labeled the token’s contract as a potential scam, helping warn traders before additional funds flowed into the project.
Fake Token Briefly Surges Before Collapsing
Despite the fraudulent nature of the post, traders reacted almost immediately.
Within hours, VLAD’s market capitalization reportedly surged to somewhere between $4 million and $10 million, driven almost entirely by buyers who believed the token had official backing from Robinhood’s CEO.
On-chain analytics soon revealed several warning signs.
Researchers observed that approximately 70% of the token supply was concentrated among the earliest wallets, indicating that control of the project remained highly centralized. Liquidity had not been permanently locked or burned, while the token’s liquidity pool continued collecting fees for wallets controlled by the deployer.
According to multiple blockchain tracking platforms, the developer wallet eventually sold its holdings, cashing out roughly 690 ETH, valued at approximately $1.3 million at the time, before the token’s price collapsed by more than 80%.
Thousands of retail investors were left holding the token after the rapid selloff.
Although members of the crypto community later attempted to revive the project through a community takeover (CTO), Robinhood has maintained that the token is entirely unrelated to the company.

Robinhood Chain’s Growing Meme Coin Economy
The hack comes less than a month after Robinhood officially launched Robinhood Chain on July 1.
Built using Arbitrum Orbit technology, the Ethereum Layer-2 network was introduced as infrastructure for tokenized stocks, real-world assets (RWAs), and other regulated financial products. Robinhood has positioned the blockchain as a key component of its long-term strategy to expand beyond traditional brokerage services into tokenized finance.
However, early network activity has been dominated by speculative meme coin trading rather than tokenized securities.
According to Dune Analytics dashboards tracking Robinhood Chain, the network has already attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in on-chain assets, processed millions of daily transactions, and recorded hundreds of thousands of active wallet addresses shortly after launch.
The rapid influx of traders has also sparked an explosion of unofficial meme coins attempting to capitalize on Robinhood’s brand recognition.
One of the best-known examples is CashCat, a meme coin that became one of the chain’s most actively traded assets. Earlier this month, several users reported significant losses after interacting with a compromised smart contract linked to the project, highlighting the elevated risks surrounding newly launched tokens on the network.
The VLAD incident further illustrates how quickly bad actors attempt to exploit attention around emerging blockchain ecosystems.
Social Media Hacks Remain a Persistent Crypto Threat
The compromise of Tenev’s account follows a familiar pattern that has plagued the cryptocurrency industry for years.
Rather than attacking blockchain protocols directly, scammers increasingly target verified social media accounts belonging to executives, celebrities, and public figures. Once access is obtained, attackers publish fraudulent token launches or fake investment opportunities designed to exploit followers’ trust.
During the 2024 meme coin boom, verified X accounts belonging to celebrities including Sydney Sweeney, Doja Cat, and 50 Cent were all compromised to promote fake meme coins before the posts were removed.
The strategy relies heavily on fear of missing out (FOMO), as traders rush to purchase newly promoted tokens before verifying whether the announcements are legitimate.
Unlike sophisticated smart contract exploits, these attacks primarily exploit human psychology and the perceived credibility of high-profile accounts.
Security Reminder for Crypto Investors
The incident also serves as a reminder that security risks in crypto extend well beyond blockchain vulnerabilities.
Robinhood Chain itself was not compromised during the attack. Instead, the breach appears to have been limited to Tenev’s X account, demonstrating how a single compromised social media login can trigger millions of dollars in speculative trading within minutes.
For investors, cybersecurity experts continue to recommend verifying announcements through multiple official channels before interacting with newly promoted tokens or sending funds to contract addresses shared on social media.
As Robinhood continues expanding its blockchain ambitions, the company will likely face increased scrutiny over both platform security and the growing number of unofficial projects attempting to capitalize on its brand. The Vladhood incident underscores how quickly scammers adapt to major crypto launches, using trusted identities to lure unsuspecting traders into fraudulent schemes.
