Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has updated the network’s long-term roadmap, placing greater emphasis on privacy, post-quantum security, artificial intelligence and new approaches to scaling.
In an Aug. 10 post on X, Buterin compared Ethereum’s current “Strawmap” with the roadmap published in 2023, outlining which priorities have remained, which have been downgraded and which new technologies have entered the network’s development plans.
While much of Ethereum’s original roadmap remains intact, the latest version reflects major advances in cryptography and zero-knowledge technology over the past three years. Quantum security has moved higher on the priority list, while privacy and AI-assisted formal verification have emerged as important components of Ethereum’s future architecture.

Privacy Becomes a Core Ethereum Priority
One of the clearest changes is Ethereum’s growing focus on native privacy.
The updated roadmap includes technologies such as keyed nonces, recent roots, lean privacy pools, Wormholes and parts of FOCIL, or Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists.
These mechanisms are designed to address different aspects of blockchain privacy and censorship resistance. Keyed nonces could make it more difficult to link transactions to the same user, while recent-root mechanisms could allow applications to verify recent blockchain states without exposing a complete transaction history.
FOCIL, meanwhile, is intended to make transaction inclusion less dependent on block builders, strengthening Ethereum’s resistance to censorship.
The shift is significant because privacy has traditionally been handled primarily by applications and Layer-2 networks rather than Ethereum’s base protocol. Buterin’s updated roadmap suggests privacy is increasingly being treated as a fundamental network feature.
Ethereum Prepares for the Quantum Era
Post-quantum security has also become a much more prominent part of Ethereum’s development strategy.
Ethereum relies on cryptographic systems that could eventually be vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Preparing for that possibility is complicated because replacing existing signatures with quantum-resistant alternatives could increase transaction sizes, verification costs and network bandwidth requirements.
The roadmap therefore explores technologies including LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation and “zkzk frames” as possible components of a future quantum-resistant architecture.
Buterin has also pointed to account-level protection as an area where preparation could begin before a complete protocol-wide transition becomes necessary.
For Ethereum, the challenge is not simply becoming quantum-safe. The network must achieve that goal without undermining its scalability or making transactions significantly more expensive.
Native Rollups Enter Ethereum’s Scaling Strategy
Another major addition is native rollups.
Ethereum currently relies heavily on Layer-2 rollups, which execute transactions outside the main network and use Ethereum for security and data availability. These systems generally maintain their own proof mechanisms, contracts and infrastructure.
Native rollups could move part of the verification process directly into Ethereum’s base protocol, creating a more standardized framework for verifying state transitions.
Buterin said the concept was not included in the 2023 roadmap because zero-knowledge proof technology was not mature enough at the time. Advances in SNARKs and related systems have since made native rollups a more realistic possibility.
Ethereum’s broader scaling philosophy is changing alongside this development. Instead of trying to scale every activity through one general-purpose mechanism, the network could increasingly use specialized systems optimized for high-volume activities such as token transfers, decentralized trading and privacy applications.
The updated roadmap also introduces potential markets for future blob and gas capacity. Such “blob futures” and “gas futures” could allow users and Layer-2 networks to secure future capacity in advance, helping reduce uncertainty around costs during periods of heavy network demand.
AI Could Help Verify Ethereum’s Code
Artificial intelligence is another increasingly important part of Ethereum’s technical vision.
Buterin has argued that AI-assisted formal verification could make it easier to prove that complex software behaves according to its intended specifications.
Formal verification is particularly challenging for blockchain protocols because Ethereum consists of multiple clients, cryptographic systems and interconnected layers. AI could potentially help developers analyze and verify larger portions of the protocol more efficiently.
STARK technology is closely connected to this effort. Recursive STARKs can produce proofs that verify other proofs, allowing increasingly large amounts of computation to be validated efficiently.
Buterin has suggested that similar verification techniques could eventually be applied across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers.
Could Ethereum Eventually Move Beyond the EVM?
The roadmap also hints at a potentially major change to Ethereum’s execution architecture.
The emergence of “zkzk frames” could require the protocol to expose an instruction set beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM. Among the possibilities being considered are leanISA and RISC-V.
One potential model would allow the EVM to remain compatible with existing applications while functioning as an intermediate representation above a simpler underlying instruction set.
However, Buterin stressed that this remains an early-stage concept and is not yet mature enough to represent a finalized upgrade.
Adding a Host of New Technologies, Revealing a Post-EVM Future
A Long-Term Blueprint, Not a Fixed Schedule
Ethereum’s Strawmap is not a finalized list of upgrades or a fixed activation schedule. The proposals still require research, testing and agreement among developers before they can become part of the network.
Still, the latest update reveals how Ethereum’s priorities have expanded since 2023. Scaling remains central, but privacy, quantum resistance and verifiable software design are becoming equally important to the network’s long-term strategy.
Rather than simply making Ethereum faster, Buterin’s updated roadmap points toward a broader redesign aimed at making the blockchain more private, secure and easier to verify as the technology landscape changes through the end of the decade.
