Investing in physical gold has long been a go-to strategy for preserving wealth, but holding the actual metal comes with significant hurdles: security vaults, expensive minimum purchases, and cumbersome authenticity checks.
That friction may soon disappear for everyday bank clients, as traditional financial institutions look toward blockchain-backed real-world assets (RWA) to make commodity investing as simple as sending a bank transfer.
Solving the Friction of Physical Gold
Tokenization takes physical assets, such as gold bars stored in audited vaults, and represents their ownership as digital tokens on a blockchain. For retail investors, this fundamentally changes how precious metals can be bought and managed:
- Instead of saving up to buy full physical coins or paying vault storage fees, tokenization enables fractional ownership.
- Users can buy smaller amounts tailored to their exact budget, while the underlying technology handles physical verification and custody behind the scenes.
By bringing these digital tokens into standard banking apps, tokenized gold moves from a niche crypto product into a familiar, everyday financial tool.
Inside the RCBC and PDAX Collaboration
To test this integration, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with local crypto platform Philippine Digital Asset Exchange (PDAX).
Under the agreement, the two organizations are exploring ways to connect PDAX’s regulated digital asset infrastructure directly with RCBC’s mobile banking channels. Tokenized gold is set as the initial asset under evaluation.
“For many Filipinos, investment opportunities have traditionally felt complex or out of reach,” said Lito Villanueva, Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation and Inclusion Officer of RCBC.
“Exploratory partnerships like this allow us to explore how customers can more conveniently access innovative financial services through trusted, regulated partners while keeping the banking experience simple and seamless.”

PDAX Founder and CEO Nichel Gaba highlighted that tokenization directly addresses traditional market barriers:
“Gold has been one of the most prominent and longstanding trusted sources of value for generations, but there are practical limitations to owning it: storage, authenticity, and accessibility. A lot of these barriers from the traditional world are being solved today through tokenization.”

Because the collaboration is currently at the MOU stage, both entities noted that product availability, final branding, technical development, and rollout timelines remain subject to regulatory approvals and mutual agreements.
A Growing Push for Tokenized Real-World Assets
The exploratory initiative is proof of how Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenization is increasingly becoming an important topic in the Philippine financial sector.
For RCBC, fifth among privately owned banks in the Philippines, the move builds on its existing push toward digital innovation and embedded financial services. For PDAX, the agreement expands its efforts to bring regulated digital assets to mainstream platforms. PDAX previously expanded beyond standard cryptocurrency trading by offering access to tokenized government bonds through its broker-dealer unit, PDAX Securities. If successfully deployed, the partnership would give mainstream banking clients direct, regulated access to fractional gold holdings within the mobile apps they already use daily.
