Hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has formally requested all authorized resellers and distributors across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to pull all Ledger products off store shelves and suspend sales immediately while an investigation into physical hardware tampering continues.
In an official incident update issued October 13, 2026, Ledger confirmed that the suspension specifically covers retail and online distribution channels in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
“Ledger is asking resellers and distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales of Ledger devices while the investigation is ongoing. This includes taking products off the shelves,” the company stated in an official announcement. Teardowns Confirm Tampered Devices Beyond CryptoBilis
The expansion of the retail pause follows breaking teardown discoveries that contradict earlier assumptions that the compromised hardware was isolated strictly to Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis.
Security researchers Mark Karpelès and Ben Yorke publicly documented hardware teardowns of newly purchased Ledger Flex devices obtained from major retail chains, including tech retailer Challenger at VivoCity in Singapore and airport retail vendor Metapod at Singapore Changi Airport.
Hardware inspections confirmed that these units contained factory-level spy implants engineered to fit precisely inside the original Ledger Flex chassis. The custom modifications include:
- Integrated LTE Modem & eSIM: Custom wireless communication chips and eSIM modules designed to transmit data over local cellular networks.
- Dedicated Power & Custom Wiring: Auxiliary batteries, ribbon cables, and precision connectors tapping directly into internal display circuit lines.
- Factory-Sealed Packaging: Units inspected from airport stores arrived in pristine, factory-sealed boxes showing no obvious external signs of physical intrusion prior to unboxing.
“If you think the Ledger spyware incidents are isolated, check the full teardown,” noted researcher Ben Yorke. “Custom antenna, battery, ribbon cables, connectors, eSIM, LTE—and it all fits in the original Ledger Flex case. This is not a one-off job.”
Ledger Maintains Core Systems Are Safe
Despite the expanding scope of compromised retail units, Ledger maintained that all verified fund-draining incidents remain geographically contained and that the company’s internal manufacturing, firmware, and direct online fulfillment channels are uncompromised. The company’s internal security team, the Ledger Donjon, is currently receiving and analyzing physical units recovered from affected buyers to trace where in the retail distribution chain the physical modifications occurred.
Urgent Action Items for Hardware Wallet Owners
Security experts and Ledger Support strongly advise crypto holders across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to observe the following precautions:
- Stop Setup Immediately: Do not unbox, power on, or initialize any Ledger device purchased from third-party resellers, retail stores, or airport vendors in Southeast Asia or Hong Kong within the last 120 days.
- Migrate Active Funds: If you have already initialized a Ledger device bought from a regional retail store, transfer your assets immediately to a secure wallet using a newly generated recovery phrase.
- Verify Direct Source: Only purchase hardware signers directly from manufacturer web stores (
ledger.com) to ensure factory-to-door chain of custody. - Report Compromised Hardware: Users who suspect their device contains physical modifications should submit inquiry tickets directly through Ledger’s official support portal at support.ledger.com.
