The institution has deep local roots, originating as The Rural Bank of Pagsanjan in 1965 before later renaming to Banco Laguna. Following acquisition steps involving Sea Limited (the parent company of Shopee), it rebranded to SeaBank Philippines in 2021, and subsequently to MariBank Philippines Inc. Operating as a digital-first rural bank, MariBank scaled aggressively, becoming the country’s largest rural bank by assets by late 2025. But there was a catch: its app was onboarding users nationwide, naturally blowing past the BSP’s 30% non-local limit for rural bank charters.

The solution was a formal license conversion. In July 2026, the BSP officially issued MariBank its Certificate of Authority to operate as a full Digital Bank, making it the 7th licensed digital bank in the country.
