Life Sentences for Crypto Scams, Capital Punishment for Fatal Abuse

Passed during a combined session of the country’s lower and upper houses in Naypyidaw, the legislation imposes three strict tiers of punishment:

• Life Imprisonment for Crypto Fraud: Running an online scam center or orchestrating digital currency and cryptocurrency investment schemes carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
• 10 Years to Life for Forced Coercion: Anyone using violence, torture, unlawful arrest, detention, or cruel treatment to force individuals into operating online scams faces between 10 years and life in prison.
• Mandatory Death Penalty: If forcing a victim to commit online scams through violence or illegal detention results in that person’s death, the law strictly mandates capital punishment.

Lower House MP Aye Chan confirmed that the death penalty remained in the approved version following parliamentary debates, noting that the core structure of the original draft passed without significant changes.

The Human Cost Behind Crypto “Pig Butchering”

The legislation arrives amid global attempts to disrupt “pig butchering” cons, which are manipulative romance and investment schemes where fraudsters build trust with targets online over months before convincing them to transfer funds into rigged cryptocurrency trading platforms.

While these illicit operations generate billions of dollars annually, their physical infrastructure relies heavily on human exploitation. Gangs frequently lure workers from across Southeast Asia, including foreign nationals from the Philippines, China, and neighboring countries, trapping them in fortress-like complexes such as the KK Park compound in Myawaddy.
