Milei targets five journalists after LIBRA criminal case dismissal

Argentine President Javier Milei has named five journalists in an attack on LIBRA coverage and asked who will compensate him for alleged damage to his reputation after a judge dismissed the criminal case against him.

La Nación reported that Milei published the remarks on X on Oct. 23, accusing journalists and political opponents of using the investigation to undermine his presidency. His statement followed a ruling that covered him, his sister Karina and nine other defendants.

“Who compensates me now?” he asked, according to an English translation of the Spanish statement reproduced by the newspaper.

He described the period since the token’s launch as a year, eight months and nine days of alleged lies, slander and insults. His post presented the dismissal as vindication and accused his critics of pursuing political objectives through the courts.

Milei names five journalists over LIBRA coverage

In the statement reproduced by La Nación, Milei singled out Hugo Alconada Mon, Carlos Pagni, Paulino Rodríguez, Natalia Volosín and Luis Novaresio. He accused the group of spreading falsehoods and conducting operations against his government.

The president targeted Grupo La Nación, alleging that its coverage was connected to an effort to pressure his administration over taxes. The material reviewed does not independently establish that allegation.

His criticism of the press accompanied praise for the judiciary, which he said had resisted political and media pressure. La Nación’s account reproduced his claim that the investigation sought to damage the presidency for coup-related political purposes.

At a Fundación Faro event, Milei repeated his demand for compensation and alleged an attempt to remove him through institutional channels, Infobae reported.

The event took place at the think tank led by Agustín Laje. Infobae identified U.S. Ambassador Peter Lamelas and Argentina’s ambassador to the United States, Alec Oxenford, among those present, alongside government officials and business executives.

Presidential office celebrates the dismissal

The Office of the President issued its own statement celebrating the ruling, according to iProfesional. It described the proceedings as an effort to damage Milei’s image during an election year and defended the conduct of the judiciary.

The office cited Article 336, subsection 3, of Argentina’s criminal procedure code, which provides for dismissal when the investigated events do not constitute a crime, the outlet reported.

Karina Milei welcomed the outcome in a separate social media message reproduced by La Nación. She said the accusations had damaged the siblings’ reputations and presented the decision as proof that the truth had prevailed.

As crypto.news previously reported, the criminal case was dismissed after prosecutor Eduardo Taiano requested that outcome. Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi issued the decision on Oct. 23, without any of the defendants having been called for formal questioning.

The case concerned the February 2025 launch and collapse of LIBRA, a Solana token that Milei promoted as a private initiative supporting Argentine businesses. His launch-day post included the project’s website and contract address.

Alconada Mon reports unfinished investigative steps

Among the journalists named by Milei, Alconada Mon wrote La Nación’s detailed account of the dismissal. His article reported that some evidence-gathering measures remained incomplete and that affected investors had been removed as private complainants.

The report said the judge found that the president’s public standing could have given the token visibility and inspired confidence, but that those circumstances did not establish criminal deception.

Alconada Mon reported that some blockchain tracing work could not be completed because investigators lacked licensed technical tools. Responses from companies involved in the inquiry were partial, according to his account.

Pedro Biscay, executive director of the Center for Research and Prevention of Economic Crime, criticized the dismissal as premature and called for a full review, the newspaper reported. The organization participated in the proceedings as an amicus curiae.

Separate U.S. LIBRA lawsuit ended in September

In the United States, the LIBRA class action had already been dismissed before Milei’s latest statement. Coverage published Oct. 2 detailed the court’s rejection of claims involving Meteora, former CEO Benjamin Chow and the Kelsier defendants.

Judge Jennifer L. Rochon’s Sept. 29 opinion granted the dismissal motions and denied permission to file a second amended complaint. The final page directed the clerk to close the case.

The order used different grounds for different claims. Fraud and conspiracy-to-defraud counts against the Kelsier defendants failed to state a claim; the remaining counts against them were dismissed for lack of personal jurisdiction. Claims against Chow and Meteora were dismissed for failure to state a claim.

Earlier, in August 2025, Rochon lifted a freeze on $57.6 million in USDC held in wallets linked to Davis and Chow. Reporting at the time said investors were seeking more than $100 million in damages.

The September opinion identifies the plaintiffs as Omar Hurlock of Brooklyn, New York, and Anuj Mehta of Arlington, Virginia. Both brought the action on behalf of themselves and other investors.
